WATCHES, Howard, Hamnrlpn wannam, Tbe sad Intelligence was received In this city yesterday morning of the death of Miss Mamie Mitchell, eldest daughter of Prof. James Mitchell, editor of Ihe Little Rock Democrat, which occurred at ber uncle's, near Wyandotte, where she was visiting. Though not entirely unexpected tbe news of ber death will sadden Ihe hearts of many friends here. Miss Mitchell bas been lu III health for some time, and last winter, in company with ber fatber, she went to California. where she hoped to find relief from suf feting in that mild climate, and until a few days ago was thought to be Improving.

Telegrams, staling ber alarmlag illness, were received by ber parents last Saturday and ber mother at nin set out on the aad journey to ber bedside. The summons, however, was too short and Mrs. Mitchell will be recalled liefore reaching her destination. Miss Mitchell was about years of age; waa a young lady of rare accomplishments, being educated in (lie best schools of Virginia and her death is a sad stroke to ber toying parents, ho have tbe heartfelt sympathy ot many friends and acquaintances here and elsewhere Arkansua Democrat. A freight train ran into the washout wrecking the engine and several cars. Fireman Frank Priester ami hrakeman Wbitey Owens were instantly killed and engineer Sid llockett badly hurt. At the hour of going to press but very meagre details of accident have been received here.

A washout is also reported near Alamlllo. Superintendent Smith and Mr. (lable, of the A. bave gone to Oak creek, near Flagstaff, on a Ashing excursion. As both of these gentlemen are known to possess (ieorge Wasblngtonian ideas of truth the result of the trip will never be know n.

The Journal sends general manager Robinson and family out on a special train on a fishing excursion this morn ing. Mr. JloblnBon was not aware of having gone on such a trip until be read it in that paper. He Is at bis desk to-day as usual, and has not thought of making a raid on the finny beauties. Professor Wendell, the well known operator, who bas been with the Art Parlors for several years, is still kept busy producing the finest effects in photography that are turned out anywhere.

Mr. Wendell will remain with the Art Parlors, where everybody wanting flist-class work Is invited to call and see him. tf Lieutenant Del.any of tbe Ninth Infantry is at the Glranl. awaiting the arrival of bis regiment now enroute from Fort Russell, near Cheyenne, Wyoming, to this department. Tbe headquarters of the regiment with two companies will be at Wiugato, two companies will go to Fort Whipple, two to Fort Apache, and two to Fort Thomas.

The lieutenant bas seen ears of service, and is a very pleasant, genial gentleman. Tub Democrat is pained to learn that Miss Minnie Swan, daughter of A. M. Swan of the Journal editorial staff, Is lying near to gates of death with that dread disease consumption. Miss Swan is a young lady of more than ordinary intellectual attainments and brilliancy of mind and ber death will prove a crush ing blow, not only to ber grief stricken parents, but to all wbo enjoy ber acquaintance.

Miss Swan's sister bas been telegraphed for at Yates City, and will arrive In a few days. Maior A. R. Chaffee, of tbe Cth cav alry, the well-known soldier and Indian fighter, Is at the Glrsrd bouse enroute to Fort Cummlugs, where he will be permanently stationed. Tbe major's troop hss been operating from Cummiogs all summer and has now been permanently assigned to that post.

The major has been to Fort Wtngate superintending the shipments ot the troop's property to Its new location. Major Chaffee is a veteran soldier who prefers tbs field to the parlor, and bears a record of which anv offloer might well be proud, tie will go south in the morn- wit- Rothgeb's brewery at Las Vegas Is one ot tbe most extensive and complete establishment! of the kind In the country. It has a capacity ot 6,000 barrels of beer yearly, and lias bulltnpalarge trade tnthe territory. The county of Taos alone receives one and a naif oars weekly of tbe amber fluid. The brewery keeps constantly In the vaults, which are kept at a temperature of 1 degrees above trees-ing point about 15,000 gallons of beer, and none Is placed upon tbe market until It Is four months old.

Tbe regular T. S. F. train due here at 4 o'clock this morning, is delayed by a washout east of La Junta. A 'plug" train carrying local mail and passengers will leave I.a Junta about noon for the south.

A force of printers are now busily engaged on Tub Democrat's premium list for the coming fair. The live business men an patronizing Its advertising columns very largely.
