He finished hu military carver in the Army Reserves, serving a total of tt years and tltalnuig the rank uf Lieutenant Cukmel Prior to coming tu Albuquerque, he was stationed with a helicuoier squadron at Hollomaa Air Force Bate, ills duties Included air Support fur weather letting, search and rescue, and mutlle retrieval from White Sands. He flew support when Cspt. Joseph Kittlnger jumped frum 102.800 feet near Koawtil in 1960, Kiting the record for the highest parachute Jump ever. He alto received a commendation for hit rule in rescuing survivors uf a 52 that crashed on Mount Taylor in 1961.

During his reserve duty, he con tinued to fly imatl fixed wingalrcraft, taking his children on many an impromptu flying adventure. In 191, Ron relocated hu family to Albuquerque, and obtained his Master! In Music Education from UNM. He was a choral teacher at John Adams Jr. High from 12 until 1967. After a temporary re local km to Dallas, where he received a Matters in Southwest History from SMU in he returned to Albuquerque and taught History and Civics at Del Norte High Schuol until his retirement in 1990.

Run's passions were the arts and the outdoors. He was an ardent supporter and fan of the Santa Fe Opera, Placttai Artist Series, and KNME. He volunteered on tummer work crews fur the Colorado Trail Project. He served as president on the Sierra Vista Neighborhood Association in Cedar Crest where he retired. His love of the outdoors stretched back to his youth and was a love be Instilled In each of his children.

He hiked eiteo- lively in the California Sierras and the southern Colorado Rockies. His retirement adventures included rafting the Hula-Hula River in Alaska to the Arctic Ocean, sailing from Argentina and making landfall In Antarctica, walking the Great Wall of China with his brothers and returning to their childhood home in Shanghai, and cruising the fiords and visiting 2nd cousins in Norway. In September 2001, be kad a family party of five on a hiking tour of the Italian and Swiss Alps. He became ill after returning home and wat soon dignosed with advanced stage melanoma. He was surrounded by family and loved ones during his final months.

Ron is survived by his wife of 13 years, Lila Ann Hansen; his son, Craig Hansen; two daughters, Ingrid Salomonson ana Anna Hansen-Lane; three stepsons, David, Kenneth, and Michael Leeper; and his two brothers, Gordon and David Hansen of California. He hat five grandchildren, Colter and Larkin Lane, Luke and Hope Hansen, and Danny Underwood. Services will be held at 10:00 a m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2002 at Chapel of Sandia, 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE, with Pastor David Red officiating. Friends and family are invited to I Reception following the service in the Sandia Sun Room.

George is preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters Marcelino Luna, Vidal Luna, Mariano Luna, Josefa Sisneros, Lugar-da Saiz; brother in law Luis Saiz; and sister in law Lena Luna. Wherritt received his BS degree from Tulane University in 1942, his M.D. degree from LSU in 1945, and his MPH degree from John's Hopkins University in 1954. His entire career was spent in the United States Public Heath Service (USPHS), attaining the rank of Rear Admiral. He retired November 1978. He had served 33 years in the various units of the USPHS, including the Venereal Disease Division, Hospital Division, the Indian Health Service, Medical Officer in the Coast Guard and as Regional Health Administrator.

RADM. Wherritt and his wife Doris became Associates of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita, KS. RADM. Wherritt received the USPHS Meritorious and Distinguished Service Medals as well as World War II Victory, National Defense Service, American Campaign and Good Conduct Medals.

He is a member of Beta Mu, Honorary Biology Fraternity and Alpha Kappa Kappa Medical Fraternity. He is a member of the American Medical Association and the Association of Reserve Officers, the American Public Health Association, the American Public Health Physicians Association and the New Mexico Public Health Association.
