THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Wind gusts over the Rockies on Monday toppled utility poles near Cheyenne, while most of the nation had fair weather.

The strongest winds were over southeast Wyoming with gusts of up to 70 mph near Cheyenne and to 60 mph in Cody. Livingston, also reported gusts to 60 mph. Winds were strong over the foothills of the Colorado Rockies. The U.S. Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs measured a wind gust of 46 mph.

The winds were causing dirt and sand to blow across roads over open areas. High wind warnings were posted Monday for the upper Yellowstone Valley in Montana, the east slopes of; the Montana Rockies and the Absaroka Range of northwest Wyoming. Rain fell over the coast of Oregon and Washington and rain mixed with snow over eastern Washington and northern Idaho. In separate storms, light snow fell in northeast Minnesota, northeast New York and northern New England. Much of the nation had fair weather due to a large high pressure area that stretched from Nevada across the Plains states to the middle Atlantic coast.

The warm temperatures caused an extreme avalanche hazard in the northern Oregon Cascades, amid de'ep snow. The coldest temperatures were in western Colorado and eastern Utah, where readings were in the single Temperatures around the nation at noon MST ranged from 1 degree at Gunnison, to 82 degrees at four Florida communities: Naples, Fort Myers, Miami and Vero Beach. The low temperature in the nation Monday morning was 31 degrees below zero at Gunnison. For today, the forecast called for snow over western and northeast New York, much of northern New England, and from western North Dakota to eastern Upper Michigan. Rain was expected to fall along the northern Pacific coast, with snow mixing with rain in the northern intermountain region.

Windy conditions were to continue along the east slopes of the Montana and Wyoming Rockies. Much of the rest of the nation was expected to have fair weather. High temperatures were forecast in the 20s over northeast Minnesota, extreme northern Wisconsin, Upper Michigan, northern Maine, northeast Nevada and northwest Utah; in the 30s and 40s from the northern Pacific coast across much of the intermountain region, the Rockies, the northern Plains, the upper Mississippi Valley, the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley to most of the northern and middle Atlantic Coast states; in the 50s and 60s from central and southern California across southern Arizona, the central and southern Plains, most of the middle and lower Mississippi Valley, the Gulf Coast and the Tennessee Valley to the southern Atlantic coast; and in the 70s over the southern half of the Florida Peninsula and southwest California. jrV' Satellite weather photo taken 2 p.m. Monday.

FLEMING Byers A. Fleming, 80, a resident of Albuquerque for the past 29 years, and owner of Econ-Equip, passed away this past Sunday, January 13, 1989, after a prolonged illness. JURADO Louis Jurado, age 81, and a resident of Albuquerque for 39 years, died Sunday in a local hospital. Mirabal, 90, a lifelong resident of Peralta, NM, died January 15, 1989. He Mrs. Harriet Block Robb, widow of John Donald Robb, former dean of fine arts at the University of New Mexico, died Monday at her home after an extended illness. She was 95. Mrs.

Robb was a leader in cultural and artistic organizations since she came to Albuquerque in 1941, and in New York state before that. Born in 1894 to a Peoria, 111., family that owned a Midwestern department store chain, she married Robb there in 1921. After graduation from Smith College she was a volunteer at New York City's Henry St. Settlement House, later was president of the Pelham Manor Club and founder of the Pelham Branch of the Diller-Quaile Music School. Mrs.

Robb was founder and first president of the Albuquerque Symphony Women's Association, the predecessor of the present New Mexico Symphony Guild, in 1952. She also was counselor (director) of the New Mexico Council of Garden Clubs, District 1 and a charter member of Albuquerque Pan-American Round Table No. 1. She is survived by a son, John D. Jr.

of Albuquerue; two daughters, Mrs. Nancy Robb Briggs of Albuquerque and Mrs. Priscilla Robb McDonnell of St. Louis; 12 granchil-dren and 16 great-grandchildren. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Albu- ALEXANDER Fred S.

Alexander, 77, a resident of Albuquerque for 16 years, died Sunday. He is survived by his son, Fred S. Alexander III and wife, Susan of Aurora, CO; grandchildren, Kather-ine Rene Alexander of Houston, TX and Zachary L. and Andrew T. Alexander, both of Aurora, CO; and sister-in-law, Nonia Pistole of Oklahoma City, OK.

Mr. Alexander was a member of St. John's Episcopal Cathedral. He was 32nd degree mason and a member of the Blue Lodge 1233 of Tyler, TX. Services will be held Wednesday, 11:00 AM at St.

He' is survived by his wife, Marianne Turonek Armijo of the family home; his parents, Robert Anthony Armijo and Rose B.

Armijo, both of Albuquerque; one sister, Sabina Gonzales of Rio Rancho. Mr. Armijo requested that no services be held. She was preceded in death by two of her children, Francis Eugene and Lea Marie. Mrs. Christensen was a member of the College of Regents and Academy of Friendship with the Women of the Moose Chapter 1266. She was an active member of the Women of the Mooose bowling league. Strong-Thorne, 1100 Coal SE. HA WKES James H. Hawkes, 77, a resident of Belen, NM for 45 years, passed away in a local hospital Sunday. He is survived by his wife, Lena Hawkes, of the family home; three daughters, Marlene Toma and Clara Hawkes, both of Houston, TX and Elizabeth Mollar and husband, David of Bernalillo, NM; five sons, James H. Hawkes Jr.

of Albuquerque, Dallas W. Hawkes of Belen, NM, Dykes Hawkes and wife, Nelta of Geranimo, TX, Daniel Hawkes and wife, Mary Ann and Michael Hawkes and wife, Carmila, both of Belen; two sisters, Gladys Brady and husband, Andy and Ruth McGuire, all of Albuquerque; one brother, Harold L. Hawkes of Albuquerque; and six grandchildren. He was a member of the Christian Church of Los Lunas. He was a conductor for A.T.

Sarracino will lie in state Tuesday evening after 7:00 at Holy Rosary Church. SINGER-Glenda J. Singer, 49, a resident of Albuquerque for 15 years, died Saturday. She is survived by her husband, Leland B. Singer of the home; sons, Richard and Lee Singer of the home; daughter, Susan Singer of Meadow Lake, NM; grandchildren, Christian and Cameron Riddle, both of Meadow Lake, NM; parents, Elbert and Beatrice Maney of Hayesville, NC; and brother, Dewain Maney of Flagstaff, AZ.

Mrs. Singer was an active member of 1st United Methodist Church. Memorial Services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 PM at 1st United Methodist Church, 4th and Lead SW, with Dr. Edwin Chappell officiating. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Memorial Park.

MORIYAMA John Michi Moriyama, 84, a 10 year resident of Albuquerque, after a short illness passed away peacefully, with all immediate family present, on January 10 at St. Joseph Hospital.

He is survived by his wife, of 60 years, Elsie Nobuko; son, Raymond J. and wife, Sachi of Toronto, Canada; daughter, Joan K. Hatashita and husband, John of Waterloo, Canada; daughter, Margaret E. Kudo and husband, Albert M. of Albuquerque; and 12 grandchildren.

Cremation was held at Vista Verde Memorial Park, arranged by Sunrise Cremation Society on January 12th. She was a member of Berean Circle at Immanuel Presbyterian Church; a mem WASHINGTON (AP) Sterling Allen Brown, the District of Columbia's poet laureate and a former English professor at Howard University, has died. He was 87.

The son of a Howard University religion teacher, Brown studied poets and black leaders and sought, through his own poetry, to portray the diversity of American life for blacks. He taught at several colleges before joining the Howard staff from 1929 until his retirement in 1969. OVER 100 YEARS officiating. Entombment will follow. French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE. DAZZOJoseph Dazzo, 85, died Sunday, January 8th, 1989 at his residence ill Salinas, CA following a lengthy illness. A native of Colorado, Mr. Dazzo had lived in Salinas for 18 years.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence; three daughters, Ursula Robinson and husband, William of Flint, MI, Sherri Robinson and husband, John of Washington and Lori Jo Knutsen and husband, Dean of Apple Valley, CA; she is also survived by one sister, Johanna Crause of Sunnyvale, CA. Mrs. Hutchinson moved to New Mexico from Flint, MI in 1980. She was born in Freihung West Germany, came to the United States in 1952 and became a citizen of the United States in 1954. She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church.
