He didn't know whether the grandmother had ever seen the ocean. On Friday morning, they headed to Pfeiffer Beach. The waves were pounding on huge rocks jutting out into the ocean as T.J. scampered, ahead on the sand and Ivy strolled with the women. Then the girl ven-! tured in.

"Really this is not a swimming beach, and we do not advertise it as a swimming beach" said Bruce Emmens, district ranger for the, Monterey Ranger District, which oversees the beach. "The conditions shout, 'Watch out!" A riptide grabbed the girl, pulling her away from shore. Her grandmother jumped in to help her. Then Mrs. Pacheco went in after them both.

A mile up the beach, surfer Terry Prince was having his morning coffee when a friend said there was a report on the scanner that three people were drowning. "I pulled on a wet suit and stuffed a board in the car," said Prince, 48. "I knew minutes were important here. That is a treacherous beach. We're pulling people out of it all the time always tourists.

Locals won't swim there. They know better." He could not see the three when he arrived at the beach, but paddled out and found Ivy. A medic on the beach got Ivy's heart beating. Prince went back in with two other people to get Mrs. Pacheco and Rombold.

Both women were dead; when pulled from the water. Ivy died that night at a hospitaL The beach has no warning signs and no lifeguard. "I'm so mad about this whole thing," Prince said. "Three lives! Can you believe it?" California Beach' Not for Swimming By Maria Sudekum Fisher T)e Associated Press Back in Ottawa, the biggest body of water around is Lake Pomona, usually a placid blue-green expanse where the waves reach maybe 2 feet. Nothing in Ottawa could have prepared 10-year-old Ivy Pacheco and her mother and grandmother for the riptides, whirlpools, rocks and crashing 6-foot waves at Big Sur in California, 130 miles south of San Francisco.

The cold waters took the lives of all three on Ivy's first trip to the ocean last week. Ivy ventured into the surf and was pulled out to sea. Her mother, Mary "Paulie" Pacheco, 38, and grandmother, Judith Rombold, 65, of Wichita, died trying to rescue her. "Three at once is quite a load to bear," said Manuel Pacheco Ivy's uncle. The family in Ottawa is trying to comfort David Pacheco, Ivy's father, a construction worker who couldn't make the trip, and her younger brother, 8-year-old who witnessed the drownings.

"I don't know if it's set in. He's usually a really happy little boy, but he's not smiling a lot right now," Manuel Pacheco said. Mrs. Pacheco and Rombold had taken Ivy and TJ. last week for a long-awaited vacation to California to watch Mrs.

Pacheco's sister run in a marathon. "It was the little girl's first time going to the ocean. She was real excited," Manuel Pacheco said. He believes it was the first time Mrs. ARCHIBEQUE Mass of Christian burial for Mr.
