FINANCIAL NEW YORK. May 1 (AP) ing the favorable traffic signal of cheap money, the stock market steered Friday into a one -way street and came up precipitately at the bottom of the largest decline since early last December.

Sales totalled 5,986,800 shares, the year's record total. After moving Irregularly during most of the day, the market was carried downward with exceptional rapidity in the final hour on an enormous volume of short selling and pool liquidation and the final prices disclosed net losses of to 16 points, chiefly in the Industrial, utility. and specialty groups. Sales in the last 50 minutes exceeded 3.000,000 shares as blocks of 5,000 to 20,000 shares of prominent stocks were unloaded. The late selling came suddenly and found in the tape well abroast of the trading, but the ticker soon tell behind under the enormous volume of offerings.

The decline, as measured by the price Index of 90 strares, was 5.8 points, sure passing the drop of last Monday by 9-10 of point. The day's news WAS rather mixed. President Hoover's encouraging report on business prospects before the United States chamber of commerce and low. ering of money rates on this market were accompanied by a reduction in the prices of a few steel items by and United States Steel subsidiary and by another ease in commodities. The cut in the New York federal reserve bank's rediscount rate did little to bring money into adjustment with the new figure, and failed to have the bullish stock market effect which previous reductions had had.

Wall Street was inclined to regard the new rate as 40 Indication that money was going besging, and operator for the decline seized on thie point to bolster their case. Abitibi Ahumada Allegheny Allied Chem. Dye Amerada Am. Bk. Nt.
